Greater Providence Baptist Church located at 5350 Marvin D. Love Freeway in Dallas, Texas 75232 is excited to announce that, after a long, careful search and much prayer, we have a New Senior Pastor! Pastor Dr. Walter R. Gibson Jr. and his wife, Tarsha, are coming to us from Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Lansing, Michigan. His first sermon with us will be on Easter Sunday morning, April 17, 2022. The Installation Service is scheduled for May 22, 2022.
A native of Houston, Texas, Rev. Dr. Walter R. Gibson was called to preach and proclaim the gospel in 1989 at Greater Jerusalem Missionary under the late Dr. C.D. Daniels. In 1990, he entered Southern Methodist University and earned a BA Degree in December 1994.
In his perpetual pursuit to serve humanity for the cause of Christ, Dr. Gibson began his theological training at the College of Biblical Studies (Houston), and Houston Graduate School of Theology where he earned his Master’s Degree (2001). Dr. Gibson served in several capacities as a staff member of New Mt. Calvary Baptist Church (Houston) under the late Dr. Willie Jones from 1999-2006. In December 2006, he was called to Lansing, MI to serve as pastor of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. Through Dr. Gibson’s inspirational teaching, preaching and leadership, the church grew numerically, financially, spiritually and in its ability to serve its local and regional community as well as in its international reach.
Dr. Gibson earned his Doctorate of Ministry in 2014 from Houston Graduate School of Theology with an emphasis in Spiritual Formation and Direction. Dr. Gibson provides consultation to churches seeking to engrain spiritual formation into their culture. He has demonstrated the importance of being a lifelong learner through completion of Proclaimers Place Seminar through Baylor University George W. Truett Theological Seminary as well as other internationally recognized leadership seminars and Expository preaching conferences.
Dr. Gibson has been a featured lecturer for the Wolverine State Convention of Christian Education in Michigan, numerous college and university chapel and campus events, Campus Crusade for Christ, as well as local, state and nationally based civic and community-oriented platforms. He served as the President of the Churches of Greater Lansing which consisted of over 40 churches that served as the hands and feet of Jesus in the Mid-Michigan area. Dr. Gibson’s gift of preaching and teaching has carried him to pulpits across the country and throughout Ghana. He served at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary in multiple consulting and mentoring roles and as Adjunct Professor of Spirituality.
Dr. Gibson is an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated. He is the author of the inspirational book, “No More Business as Usual” which tackles the issues of personal integrity, devotion, and commitment. His most recent book, “You TWO Can Have a Great Marriage”, co-authored with his wife, was released in Spring 2021.
Most importantly, Dr. Gibson is a saved and born-again child of God.
He is a Spirit-filled, Bible-believing and a resurrection-sharing believer in the Lord Jesus Christ! He is married to the love of his life, Tarsha. They have two dynamic sons, Cameron and Christian. One daughter-in-love, Whitney, a granddaughter, Wylie, and a grandson Wade.
